The flames burn atop the thin pillar candle, illuminating a future of love, luck, and happiness inside the Greek Orthodox church in Sydney where Katie and John were united in marriage. Biting Designs used expert wedding cinematography to capture each aspect of the newlyweds’ traditional Sydney Greek wedding.
Family is such an important part of a Greek wedding, and John and Katie’s ceremony was no exception. From Katie being escorted down the aisle by her loving mom, to John’s emotion-filled speech to his father, this wedding was as much about a union of bride and groom as it was about the creation of one big family. Not a moment is missed, as Biting Designs created the perfect visual keepsake for Katie and John to share with every member of their (now even more extended) family.
John’s groomsmen helped him prepare for his big day with a small gathering at his house, where each person present takes part in dressing and congratulating the groom. John’s brother served as his best man, the koumbaro, and as customary to Greek weddings, he gave the groom a fresh shave as a sign of the trust and bond between the two. Similarly, Katie’s bridal party took very great care of their beautiful bride, helping her with her dress and makeup.
As the candles continue to burn, the wedding rings are beautifully presented surrounded by the sweetness of Jordan almonds, known as koufeta, a staple of Greek weddings for the symbolism of fertility, strength of marriage, and sweetness of love.
Not to be forgotten, the Greek tradition of breaking plates as the couple dances, was prominent throughout the gorgeous ceremony. As each plate shatters against the floor, the noise is said to ward off any evil spirits that may be lurking near, and to create kefi, the overwhelming feeling of joy and emotion present at the celebration of Katie and John’s marriage. Accompanied by their closest family and friends, Katie and John danced the night away at their modern Greek wedding.
Biting Designs offers exquisite wedding cinematography throughout Sydney, and captures the memories of a lifetime on film. To Katie and John, Biting Designs has one word: “Opa!”
